Are You An Emotional Eater?

During my last spirit led consecration time with the Lord, He revealed a deeper truth to me regarding emotional eating and His desire for me and the body of Christ to be made whole through submitting our physical appetites to the Lord. He desires for us to receive the fullness of His glory in mind, spirit, soul, and body so we can be fully reconciled to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

I share this truth with the readers of this article because I have encountered an emotional and a perspective shift of understanding the importance of honoring our physical health with healthy eating and physical activity. When we do this we partner with God and submit our will, desires, and emotions to God; so His glory can be evident not only in our mind, spirit, and soul but also in our body. There is a glory of our mind, there is a glory of our spirit, and there is a glory for our soul, but there is also a glory of the body that is commissioned to fulfill the glory of God in the earth as His will is already established in heaven. Food empowers the emotions to fulfill the desires of God because it fuels our emotions and our desires or it participates in enslaving the body to do the will of the enemy.

In this article, I share my perspective shift and journey of submitting my whole person to include, physical appetite to the promptings of God to heal my soul that encompasses my will, desires and emotions. I did not arrive here overnight. I intentionally seek God’s will for my life to include my appetite for food. It is a few days before I share this post that He revealed my emotional eating needs to go to another level of surrender to His will in order for His glory to be revealed in my spiritual and physical body.

Every time our emotions submit to God’s will, our emotions shift and align with His will for our life. The soul encompasses the will, desire and emotions of the flesh and is people’s power to manifest the will, desires and emotions of the spiritual realm into the earthly realm. This alignment of spirit and soul manifests the will, desires, and emotions of the Spirit of life or the Spirit of death within the earth (John 4:1-6).

Proverbs 18:21 tells us death and life is in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruit. For years I was able to identify the spirit in this scripture pertaining to the words of life and the words of death. Most recently, God has revealed to me another part of this scripture when it comes to emotional eating. Our tongue is a two edge sword because it reveals the spirit we are in agreement with when we speak, as well as when we eat. Words are spiritual food that feeds our thought life and food is physical food that gratifies our emotions and feeds or diminishes the health of our physical bodies. Spiritual food of words and physical food both implant life or death in the spiritual and physical body simultaneously.

Believe it or not, we all are emotional eaters. Whether the emotion is aligned with the Spirit of God’s will or aligned with the spirit of Satan’s will.  Our soul that encompasses the will, desires and emotions are the fulfillment of the desire of the spiritual realms that reside in heaven or hell. When we submit our will, desires, and emotions to God He transforms our will, desires, and emotions to align with His own. Giving us the victory in our soul as our Redeemer and Lord.

Outside of God’s Holy Spirit, our heart is wicked and deceitful. Emotions make the world go round because emotions are purposed to heavily influence the actions of our body to make a heart response. This heart response can be from a desperately wicked and deceitful heart that has been damaged by the presence of sin or a heart that has been purified with the grace and truth established in the presence of  God’s Holy Spirit. Inside of God’s presence, our heart is full of grace and truth. It is this grace and truth that is our power to overcome the will, desires, and emotions of a desperately deceitful and wicked heart that has the presence of sin.  Our heart has the will to love or the will to lust. It is this will that manifests the blessings or curses of life including the blessing and curse of emotional eating.

Jesus tells us in Luke 4:1 that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out the mouth of God. This reveals the power of spiritual and physical food. This also reveals that our physical appetites must be submitted to the will, desires and emotions of God for our lives. Our mouth is the gateway to the soul because our mouth is purposed to eat not only physical food to nourish the body, but it is purposed to speak God’s word as it releases the word of God, also known as the bread of life. This bread of life is the food that nourishes our spiritual bodies that encompass the will desires and emotions of the spirit and soul. The more we submit our appetite for physical food to God the more our emotions will align with the will, desires and emotions of God’s kingdom. God desires to release His kingdom in the whole person of our mind, spirit, soul, and body.

I hope this informative article is as inspiring to you as it is to me to think more about our relationship with food and emotional eating. Does our food choices glorify God or does it empower the spirit of gluttony known in modern times as the spirit of obesity? It is the intent of my heart to encourage you as I continue to encourage myself to seek God’s will, desires, and emotions even when it comes to our appetite for food. I desire that we may discover how He has purposed us to honor His presence in our earthly bodies as we seek to honor Him in our spiritual bodies of mind, soul, and spirit.

Is It Time For A Heart Check Up?

Any desire that is not submitted to God’s will for your life is idol worship. In Exodus 20:30 God’s word tells us He will have no other gods before Him. A god is an idol. Anything or anyone we choose to serve outside of God’s leading becomes a god because we have given it power over our mind, choices, heart and strength that is revealed in how we spend our time, abilities and money (time, talent, treasure) to obtain it. This is a demonstration of our faith, belief and trust in that desire to make us happy. Although we may feel some type of happiness, it will not be lasting because the desire has not been purified in God’s love. Jesus said in Matthew 6:24 you can not serve two masters, you will love the one and despise the other.

Our motivations for what we do on a daily basis reveals who we desire to serve! Make sure your desires are rooted in the love of Christ and not the love of idols! If you have desires outside of God’s kingdom and righteousness then you need a heart check up. You are experiencing a spiritual heart disease. Any desire that is pursued outside of God’s will for your life is idol worship. Idol Worship is rooted in ungodly desires or desires outside of God’s timing and will for your life. These desires are reflected in the worship of ourselves, people, cars, houses, money, religion, careers, etc. outside of God’s will and timing.

You can not serve God’s Kingdom way and Satan’s kingdom way. Satan’s kingdom way is the mindset of desires outside of God’s kingdom and righteousness that is His will. These desires become idols within our lives that get rooted in our heart and come out in our lifestyles. Our journey on earth is to purify our hearts of every desire outside of God’s will. It is the pursuit of these desires that separates us from the image and likeness of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God said in Genesis 1:26 Let us make man in our image and our likeness…… To be in the image and likeness of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit we must be one with their desires. These desires become our reason for living.

Do you remember the two commandments Jesus left? He reveals this truth in those commandments. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus said to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength which is the greatest commandment. Within our hearts reside the desires that we wake-up to every day to pursue with our greatest resources of time, relationships and money. It is this unrighteous pursuit of these ungodly desires that hardens our heart against the sensitive promptings of the Holy Spirit. Are you pursuing the desires you have in your life in vain? The pursuit of these desires are in vain if it is not the will of God for your life. Therefore you need a heart check up to get it back to peak fit condition. This is not possible without the faith, belief and trust in the power, love and mercy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
